The bank sends him a summary of his year every January and he has never once opened it in January.
He opens it in March, on a Saturday, usually when he is looking for something else entirely. And he reads it the way you read a letter about somebody who used to live at your address. Twelve months of a life, sorted into little gray headings by a machine that has no idea who he is and has, somehow, described him better than his own mother could.
There is a heading for the coffee place near the depot. There is a heading for a repair shop he only went to twice and both times he was furious. There is a long, quiet, uninterrupted heading for a lock up garage on the far side of town, holding a workshop he set up eleven years ago and has stood in maybe four times since, because he keeps meaning to and the weekend keeps going.
And then there is his daughter, who is nine, and who has a Thursday.
Thursday is theirs. He would tell you, without pausing, that Thursday is the best thing in his week, and it is true, and he is not lying about it, and he would fight you about it if you suggested otherwise. Thursday is a walk to the shop and back and a bag of the sweets she likes and a conversation about a girl called Priya who is either her best friend or her mortal enemy depending on the week.
Thursday is not on the summary. Thursday has never generated a heading in its life.
He sat there with the paper in his hand, in a kitchen with the radio on, and he did not feel guilty exactly. He felt something narrower and stranger. He felt like a man who had been reading a description of himself written by a stranger who had only ever watched what he did and never once heard what he said.
You have had that morning. Maybe not with a bank summary. Maybe with a calendar, or a photo roll, or a stack of receipts in the glove compartment. Some plain record of where you actually sent things, sitting next to the sentence you say out loud about what matters to you, and the two of them not quite in the same handwriting.
I want to tell you what that gap is and what it is not, because almost everybody gets it backwards, and getting it backwards is exhausting.

The verse runs the other way, and that is the good news
Nearly everyone has heard the line. Almost nobody has heard which direction it points.
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.Matthew 6:21
Read it slowly. Which one is the cause?
We quote it as though Jesus said: get your heart right, and your treasure will follow. Sort out how you feel, generate the correct affection, and eventually the affection will show up in your accounts. That reading turns the verse into a test you can only pass by feeling something on command, and it leaves you standing over a piece of paper in March deciding you are a fraud.
But that is not the sentence. The sentence names the treasure first. Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. The treasure goes, and the heart follows it there.
Which means the gap you found this morning is not a verdict on your love. It is a map of where things have been going. And a map is a completely different object from a verdict. You can argue with a verdict for years and get nowhere. A map you can simply read.
And you are not a liar about your own heart. That is not my reassurance: the written word makes the treasure the cause and the heart the thing that follows, so a gap on a page is a description of traffic and never a verdict on love, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my paragraph who makes that land in a person standing over a piece of paper in March.
And it means something better than that, which I would like you to hear before you do anything at all with it.
You are allowed to arrive second.
You do not have to manufacture a feeling before you move anything. You are not required to work yourself up into the correct emotional temperature about your own daughter, or your own home, or the person down the road, and only then be permitted to act. Nobody has ever successfully done that. The heart is not the engine in this sentence. The heart is the passenger, and it is a faithful one. Send the treasure, and it comes. That is not my optimism: it is the plain direction of the written word, and the Holy Spirit set it down in that order on purpose, because He knows exactly how little authority a tired person has over their own affections at nine o clock at night.
That is mercy written into the mechanics of you. God made you so that your affections travel toward what you invest in, which is the only reason anybody has ever grown to love a hard thing, a difficult child, a plain town, a long marriage, a slow work. If love had to come first every time, none of it would exist.
So let me say the thing I am not going to say.
I am not going to tell you a figure. I do not know your life, your obligations, your people, or what is coming due next week, and it would be a kind of arrogance to open my mouth about any of it. Nothing here has an amount attached in either direction, and nothing here gets earned. God is not standing behind a till. There is no receiving moment in the whole Christian faith that has a price on the other side of it, and if anyone has ever taught you otherwise, you can put it down here and leave it.
And the thing you named this morning is already yours to fund. Heaven is not withholding permission and never was: the word says every good gift comes down from the Father of lights, and the Spirit is the one who lets a person spend like a daughter in her own Father house instead of like somebody asking at a gate.
What I am saying is smaller and much harder to argue with. Look at where it went. Then send something after the thing you actually said you loved. Something real, whatever real means in your house. And then wait, without straining, and notice where your heart turns up.
Because it will turn up. That is not motivational language. That is the sentence Jesus said, running in the direction He said it.
So here is the moment, and it is quieter than you expect.
Nothing is being asked of you except honesty about one line. Not the whole page. Not a reckoning, not an inventory of your character, not a list of everything you have got wrong since you were twenty two. One line.
Because the thing standing between you and this is not really the money. It is the fear that if you look properly at where it went, you will discover you are a liar about your own heart. You are not. You have never been. A person can love a thing genuinely and have sent almost nothing after it, and the reason is usually that nobody ever showed them which direction the verse runs.
You are not being caught out here. You are being handed the steering.
You are free here. Not free once the page is tidy and not free once you feel differently about it: the written word says it is for freedom that Christ has set you free, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that true in an ordinary person on an ordinary evening with one line in front of them.
Declare this over yourself
Say them out loud, with the page still in front of you. This authority is not something you are working up to: you are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the word you speak here is an ambassador's word, carrying what the King has already said. Speak it, and leave the outcome to Him, however He answers and in whatever way He chooses to answer it.
- Treasure, you are not staying where you drifted. The Word of God says that where my treasure is, my heart goes after it, so I am sending you toward the people I said I loved, and my heart has orders to follow.
- Money, you are a tool and you are not a verdict on me. In the name of Jesus I take back the first look and the last word from a number, and I give both to the Lord who owns the field and the cattle and the hills they stand on.
- Lord, You are my Provider and You have never once billed me for Your attention. Thursday is on the record now, and what I fund and what I love are becoming the same thing in Your hands.
