The Safe NumberHebrews 13:5

The Figure That Rations Your Time

This message is for the figure that has been deciding, without ever being consulted out loud, how many hours you are allowed to spend on the people in front of you

Marco left his uncle's house forty minutes earlier than he wanted to, on a Sunday, and nobody asked him to go.

That is the whole event. There is no drama in it and nothing went wrong. It was a good afternoon and his uncle is eighty-one and the card game was still going and Marco stood up, and everybody said the things people say, and he drove home.

He has done that a great many times.

What he could not work out, driving back, was what exactly had made him stand up. It was not another commitment. There was nothing that evening. It was not tiredness and it was not that he had stopped enjoying it.

He got about halfway home before he located it, and when he did he pulled into a lay-by and sat there for a while, because it was not what he expected.

He had stood up because of a figure.

Not directly. Nobody thinks about their savings in the middle of a card game. But there is a thing that has been running in Marco for about nine years now, which is an ongoing sense of how much is behind him and therefore how much time he is entitled to spend on things that do not build anything.

The figure does not tell him to work on a Sunday. It is subtler and more expensive than that. It sets a mood. It produces, at some point in every long good afternoon, a low restlessness that presents itself as being ready to go, and he has never once traced it back to its source until that lay-by.

His hours are being rationed by an amount.

And the amount has never been consulted out loud, has never been written down, and has certainly never been asked whether it is qualified to decide how long a man may sit with his eighty-one year old uncle.

Now, hear the thing that has to be said before anything else.

Marco is not neglectful. He goes. He is there most Sundays and he does the driving and he is the one who fixes things when they need fixing, and his family would tell you he is the reliable one.

And nothing here is going to tell him that having a figure is faithless, or that a man who thinks about the future loves his family less. That is a lie and it usually gets preached at people who are carrying more than the person preaching it.

The problem is not the figure.

The problem is that it has quietly been given a portfolio it was never appointed to, and it has been signing off on hours for nine years.

You have your own version. There is a moment in good afternoons where you become ready to leave, and it is not tiredness, and if you follow it back far enough there is a number at the end of it.

Nobody is calling you cold. You are probably the one who shows up.

The clock in your chest just has a figure behind it.

The Figure That Rations Your Time

The verse joins two things nobody joins

There is a sentence in Hebrews that puts a command and a promise in the same breath, and the join is the whole teaching.

Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.Hebrews 13:5

Look at the for. The contentment is not commanded as a discipline, and it is not presented as a personality. It is grounded, in the same sentence, on a promise about presence.

Not on a promise about supply. Read it again if that surprised you. He does not say be content because you will always have enough. He says be content because He will always be there, which is a different guarantee entirely and a much harder one to counterfeit.

And in the original that promise is stacked with negatives, piled up in a way English cannot really carry, so that it reads closer to I will not, not leave you; I will never, no never forsake you. It is the sentence of somebody making certain they cannot be misheard.

And now hear what is already true over you. You are not going to be left. That is not my reassurance: the written word says it with every negative it can find, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my paragraph who makes that land in a man sitting in a lay-by halfway home.

And your contentment is not a thing you have to generate. It rests on that promise rather than on a balance, says the word, and the Spirit is the one who makes a promise feel like ground under the feet rather than a line in a letter.

Nobody is coming for your prudence

I want to be very plain, because this is where a message like this starts telling a man to be careless with his family's future, and I will not.

Nobody here is telling you to stop building. Providing for your own is commended in the New Testament in as many words, and a man who plans is not a man who doubts God.

I am not going to name your figure in either direction. I do not know your household, your health, or what is coming, and naming somebody else's number from a page is exactly the kind of interference this site refuses to do.

And nobody is telling you that having less would give you more Sundays. It would not. The restlessness is not produced by the amount, which is why passing the figure has never once quietened it for anybody.

The only thing being said is that a figure has been deciding a question that is not a financial question, and it has been doing it without ever being asked whether it was competent to.

And your hours are already yours to spend. Not once the number is right: the word says every good gift comes down from the Father of lights, and the Spirit is the one who lets a son spend like a son in his Father's house rather than like a man who is not sure he is allowed to stay.

The breakthrough

So here is the moment, and it is a piece of paper, not a change to any arrangement.

Write the figure down.

The one behind the restlessness. And you may have to sit for a minute to find it, because it does not usually announce itself as a figure; it announces itself as being ready to go.

Then fold the paper once and put it away.

Not tear it up. You are not being asked to stop building. The figure stays, and can go on doing what a figure honestly does, which is arithmetic. What changes is that it comes out of your chest, where it has been signing off on afternoons, and goes onto a table, where it can be looked at instead of obeyed.

And you are not required to earn your afternoons. The word says He hath said, I will never leave thee nor forsake thee, and it is that promise and not a balance that the contentment is hung on, and the Spirit is the one who makes it something a man rests his weight on.

That is the whole move, and there is no conversation to have with anybody.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Restlessness at four o'clock, you are a mood and you were never a schedule. Scripture hangs contentment on a promise about presence, so you have been signing off on my afternoons with no authority at all.
  2. Old figure behind it, get out of my chest in the name of Jesus. You have been asked to decide how long a man may sit with his uncle, and arithmetic was never qualified to answer that question.
  3. Lord, You have said You will never leave me nor forsake me, and You said it with every negative there is so it could not be misheard. That figure just lost its job, and folding it away and staying another hour is what I am doing this Sunday.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
