The Closed FistPsalm 24:1

Open In Public, Closed At Home

This message is for the one thing you are visibly open handed about everywhere except in your own house, where nobody is watching and the grip is completely different

Everybody who knows Ngozi would tell you she is the most open handed person in that church, and they would be right, and she is different in her own kitchen.

Not worse. That is not the word and it would be lazy. Different.

In a room, with people, she is the one who notices what is needed and produces it before anybody has finished explaining the problem. She does not perform it and she does not talk about it afterwards. Ask anyone.

At home, on her own, about one specific thing, her hand works differently. There is a hesitation. There is a small internal negotiation that never happens in public, and it happens over something that would not even register in a room full of people.

She has known this about herself for years without ever putting words on it. What put words on it was her husband asking her a completely neutral question at the kitchen table one Saturday, and hearing the pause before her answer.

He did not comment. He is not that kind of man. But she heard it too, and she has been thinking about it ever since.

Now here is what a message like this usually says next, and I am not going to say it.

It usually says that the private version is the real one, and that the public generosity is therefore a performance. That is the obvious move and it is wrong, and it is cruel, and it would land on a woman who has genuinely spent twenty years giving things away.

The public one is real. Both are real. That is the actual situation and it is far more interesting than hypocrisy.

What is true is that she is open handed about everything that has no history, and closed about one thing that does.

Because generosity in a room is not hard for Ngozi. It costs her nothing internal, because none of it touches the thing. It is not that she has been fooling anybody; it is that nobody has ever asked her for the one item that would be difficult, and it has never come up in twenty years, and so nobody, including her, has ever seen the difference.

You have your own version. There is a way your hand behaves when people can see it, and a way it behaves in your own kitchen about one specific thing, and you did not need three paragraphs to work out which one I meant.

Nobody is asking you for it, and I want that said before anything else. There is no ask at the end of this article and no plate anywhere on this site.

Open In Public, Closed At Home

The psalm settles ownership before it says anything else

There is an opening line to a psalm that is usually sung and rarely reasoned with.

The earth is the LORD's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.Psalm 24:1

It is a title deed, and the striking thing about it is what it does to the word mine.

It does not abolish it. Scripture goes on using the word constantly, and God gives people land and houses and flocks and calls those things theirs without any embarrassment at all. The psalm is not saying you own nothing.

It is saying that everything you own sits inside something else that is His, the way a tenant's furniture sits inside a landlord's house and is genuinely the tenant's furniture.

Which changes what a grip is doing. If a thing is yours absolutely, holding it tightly is simply prudent. If a thing is yours inside a larger ownership that is completely secure, then the tightness is not adding any security to it. It is only costing you the use of a hand.

And now hear what is already true over you. Nothing you hold is held only by you. That is not my reassurance: the written word puts the fulness of the earth under His name, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my paragraph who makes that a felt security in a woman standing at her own kitchen table.

And you are His before anything you have is. The word says you are not your own, you were bought with a price, and the Spirit bears witness with your spirit that this came first and settles everything downstream of it.

Nobody is asking you for anything

Now I am going to be extremely plain, because this is the exact point where a message like this becomes an appeal, and if it does that it has become the thing this site exists to refuse.

Nobody here wants the thing in your kitchen. Nothing is being asked of you at the end of this. Nothing on this site is gated, nothing is held back behind a payment, and nobody is going to tell you that opening a hand is what makes you eligible to receive from God. If a page ever does that to you, close it and do not go back, and I mean this one too.

There is no plate. There has never been one and there will not be.

And I am not going to tell you what your thing is or that it should go. I do not know your house. Some things a person holds at home are being held on somebody else's behalf, and a stranger telling you to open that hand could do real damage to somebody I have never met.

And the difference between your kitchen and the hall is not a verdict on your character. The word says God knoweth our frame, and He remembereth that we are dust, and the Spirit is the one who makes that land as kindness rather than as an excuse, which is the difference between conviction and shame.

What the grip is actually round

Here is the question worth an evening, and it is not am I a hypocrite, which is the wrong question and produces nothing but defensiveness.

It is: what does the public hand not touch?

Because the generosity is genuine and the pause is genuine, and the only way both are true is if they are about different things entirely. The room asks for things that have no history. The kitchen holds the one that does.

And what has a history is almost never valuable. It is nearly always a thing attached to a season, a person, a fear that got installed once and has never been reviewed since. Sometimes it is a promise. Sometimes it is the last physical piece of an arrangement that has otherwise gone.

None of that is contemptible and all of it can be named alone, quietly, at a table with nobody there.

You are not two people, and you never have been. That is not my flattery: the written word says you were bought with a price and are His workmanship, singular, one piece, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my paragraph who makes that hold in a woman who has just heard her own pause at her own table. The hall and the kitchen are the same person, and one of them is standing next to a history.

And whatever the pause is guarding, He is able to guard. Not once you let go: the word says He is able to keep that which is committed unto Him, and able is the word Scripture chose, and the Spirit is the one who makes that a real place to put a thing down rather than a phrase in a letter.

The breakthrough

So here is the moment, and it is your own hand, and there is nothing to tell anybody.

Make a fist.

Not tight. Just close it, and hold it as long as it stays comfortable, and while it is closed notice this: a closed hand cannot receive either. That is not a rebuke. It is only how a hand works, and it is why this is worth two minutes on a Saturday.

Then open it, and keep it open.

You are free to open your hand. Not once your kitchen matches your hall and not once you have understood the history: the word says it is for freedom that Christ has set us free, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that true in an actual hand, in an actual room, today.

And nothing is taken from an open hand here. Nobody is asking, and God does not take advantage of a lowered guard. The word says every good gift comes down from the Father of lights, and He is named as the giver, and the Spirit bears witness with your spirit that this is His settled way and not a mood that could change.

The thing can stay in the kitchen. It is the hand that is being handed back.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Pause in my own kitchen, you are attached to a history and you were never attached to the object. Scripture says the earth is the Lord's and the fulness thereof, and your tightness has never once added a thing to how safe it is.
  2. Old accusation that the private one is the real me, get out of this house in the name of Jesus. Both of them are real, and God knows my frame and remembers I am dust, and that is kindness and not an excuse.
  3. Lord, I am not my own, I was bought with a price, and that came before anything I have. My hands are open, what I was gripping was gripping me back, and I would rather have them free.
